LUMP SUM/INDEPENDENCE ALLOWANCE and other entitlements
Access Support Services regularly come into contact with claimants who are not
aware that they may have entitlement to lump sum compensation and/or the
independence allowance. It would appear that ACC has failed to effectively
communicate this entitlement to claimants over the years.
Most disadvantaged are those claimants who have literacy difficulties. These people
are strongly represented in work-related gradual process type injuries because they
tend to be engaged in physically repetitive tasks. These types of injuries tend to
reach the 10% impairment threshold, therefore qualifying them to either a lump sum
or an independence allowance.
Another group are those who were advised of their possible entitlements at a time
when they were in no state, due to the effects of their injury or medication, to
properly take in that advice.
